This project involved delving into the derivations of the letters of the English alphabet and marrying them with some sample words (ones that I found either visually interesting on the page, interesting words in-and-of themselves, or very special words) and interesting, stylized images of the letters. These were then printed and bound with book-binding hinges so that the individual letter panels face one another and all sections then fold into an accordion style book Which in turn is stored in a custom made birch and linen slip-cover case. All pages, hinges and glues are made with conservation in mind, printed with archival inks, and all aspects of the project have been made with, durable, acid-free materials.
The original concept for this type of project came during a visit to the F.W. Olin Library at Mills College in Oakland, California where I was delivering some photographs to the Special Collections Librarian. There was an “accordion style” project displayed in the hallway and I thought to myself that this style of work might work well for photographs as well, in just the right setting —- the result is this project.
